I Knew Every Answer. I Froze Anyway.

I sat down with Dr. Caroline Biesalski on the Inspired Podcast to talk about the coat we leave at the door and why legacy keeps getting postponed until it's too late to mean anything.

Three days after my role was eliminated, I was in an interview for a VP HR job at a bank.

I knew the answers. Twenty-five years reading other people's resumes. I knew exactly what to say.

I froze.

Nothing intelligent came out. I walked home and understood what my full calendar had been hiding from me: my body would not take the job.

For years I had worn my work like a coat. My time belonged to the role. When someone asked who I was, I answered with what I did. Take the coat off, and I wasn't sure what was left underneath.

That interview was the moment the coat came off for good.

I got sober nine years now. I retrained. I built a practice around the people I understand best: founders and leaders standing at the same door I once stood at.
