Arriving at Authority without the title

The Day My Calendar Emptied Out
I was David's guest on The Flipped Story — the show where every guest tells the story they flipped. Here's mine.
For twenty-five years, my calendar was booked a year ahead.
Then I walked into a meeting room for an exit interview. Mine.
The restructuring wasn't a surprise. The empty calendar was. One conversation, and the year that had been full went blank. That blank terrified me.
Three days later I sat in an interview for a VP role at a major bank. I used to be a master at interviews. This time I drew a blank. Nothing intelligent would come. My body simply refused to go there.
I walked home in the rain. Red hunter boots, white raincoat. And somewhere on that walk it landed, clean and impossible to argue with: the path I'd been on was no longer the path forward. I didn't need another 60-hour executive job. I needed a transformation.
I know that feeling now. My work is helping other people recognize it in themselves.
Because here's what nobody warns you about. When you work inside a strong brand, that brand takes more of you than you think. You become the title. People meet you and the company walks in ahead of you. Then one day you leave the coat at the door — and you find out how much of the coat had become you.
Most of my clients arrive right there. They don't know who they are without it. Neither did I.
What changed that for me showed up by accident, in an NLP weekend I took just to see if I liked it. There was a hypnosis demonstration. I booked a session — mostly to recruit the guy onto my sobriety team. What I got instead was a shift I didn't know I'd been waiting for. On the porch afterward, sun bright, trees very green, one sentence arrived: this is what I'll do for the rest of my life.
Nine years sober. More than 1,500 sessions later. Here we are.
In this episode, David and I got into:
The three careers that built this one — encyclopedia sales door-to-door, 25 years in HR, then hypnotherapy
Why "you don't have it on paper, but I know you can do it" became the through-line of my entire career
High-functioning drinking, and the night someone said the thing out loud: "wine is eating your brain"
The support team I built around a single goal — staying sober
RTT, the method I trained in under Marisa Peer: change the thought, change the emotion, change the action, change the life
The founders I work with today — mid-exit, worn down by due diligence, ready to leave millions on the table just to make it stop
The 7 out of 10: why a life that looks like a 10 from the outside can feel like a 7 on the inside
I left David with a recipe. Two ingredients. I'll leave it with you too.
Curiosity over resistance. When you feel the pull toward something new — or the flinch away from it — trade the judgment for curiosity. Dip your toes in the water. You don't owe it a lifelong contract yet.
Audit where you numb. Get honest about where you escape: alcohol, work, busyness, whatever yours is. Numbing costs you connection, and it costs you yourself. Then ask the real question — is this still the best strategy for what you actually want?
